about re-filling and reusing water bottles:
1. Most bottles specified for use in bottling water are designed to be “single serve” containers. Although the plastics they are made of ( # 1& 2 ) do not contain chemicals that normally leach out , they are not designed to be reused for other health reasons.
2. When you re-fill, and repeatedly drink from a bottle or other container, bacteria from your mouth, as well as germs and bacteria from the air around you, get on and into that bottle or container. While most of the bacteria from your mouth are beneficial, they create an environment in which other ( possibly harmful ) bacteria can grow.
3. If you don’t REPEATEDLY WASH OUT and STERILIZE that bottle or container, you are drinking from a bacteria and germ factory !!!!
4. Water that you drink from a dirty, unsanitary re-filled bottle or container will taste musty, moldy, “funky” or what ever else you may wish to call it. It is not the water that is “bad” - it is the filthy container from which you are drinking.
5. Containers that are re-filled MUST be washed AND SANITIZED every other time that they are filled. Single serve bottles are difficult to properly wash, because of their small opening. Putting them in the dish washer will not get them clean. They need to be thoroughly hand washed and rinsed with soap and water. Sanitizing with chlorine or other food approved sterilizer is essential to kill bacteria. We use ozone, which leaves no chemical residue, but that is not available to consumers.
6. If you use containers designed to be re-filled, make sure that they are not made of # 7 plastic. Certain hard plastics can release bisphenol a and other chemicals when handled roughly, and especially when washed or micro-waved at temperatures above 200 degrees F. Glass or stainless steel ( type 308 or 316 ) are a better choice for re-usable bottles.
7. If you are re-filling bottles in order to reduce your impact on the environment, please don’t do so in a way that endangers your health, or the health of your children. If you are not prepared to thoroughly clean and sanitize your multi-use containers, maybe you should consider buying single serve bottles. If they are properly recycled, they will become the polyester fill so popular in bedding and clothing. Most polyester fill materials are made from re-cycled beverage bottles.
8. To do your part in protecting the environment, we offer the following suggestions:
A. Don’t waste - consume only what you really need,
B. Don’t abuse the environment. Avoid using and disposing of chemicals and toxic materials,
C. Buy Local - shipping goods long distances consumes fuel,
D. Become energy conscious - you will be amazed how much energy you can save once you become aware of the available options,
E. Re-use where ever practicable, without endangering your family’s safety or health,
F. Re-cycle religiously. This can have a big effect on the environment,
G. Live a simple, healthy, physically active lifestyle,
H. Teach others to be good stewards of the environment.
