1. Most “spring waters” come from rock formations in mountains or other high places. Acid rain, which falls on all areas of the globe, causes carbonic acid, sulfuric acid and pollutants from the air to enter the earth each time that it rains. These chemicals tend to dissolve the rock formations over which the rain (now called “ground water”) flows in its path downwards towards wetlands and streams. These dissolved minerals, and often additional contaminants, remain in the water until it flows, or is pumped from the ground, and bottled for you to drink. Sometimes, these minerals are healthy. Often, they are not. They are often in concentrations that adversely affect your body chemistry. It is not unusual for “spring water” to contain unsafe levels of arsenic, lead, cadmium, sulfur, copper, calcium, magnesium, radioactivity, bacteria, clay and silt. The longer the distance that the water flows over rocks, the more likely that it will have elevated levels of dissolved minerals in it.
Chilmark Springwater comes not from rock springs, but from glacial sand springs. This sand is basically silica, which is very resistant to being dissolved by the natural chemicals in water flowing through it. This sand also has a beneficial effect, in that it is a natural filter for any particulate matter normally present in ground water. Coming from natural glacial formations in a protected area, which has never seen housing density, or any agricultural or industrial activity, our water is naturally clean and pure. It is totally free of the contaminants so common in municipal and private water supplies.
2. Most of the nation’s municipal water plants, and many of the private systems, use “surface water” sources. These are more likely to be contaminated by substances injurious to human health. That is why, by law, all water coming from surface water sources must be disinfected. Without such disinfection, usually with chemicals which are carcinogens, millions of Americans would be exposed to serious health risk each year. Chilmark Springwater comes from a clean ground water aquifer, which is not subject to the kinds of contamination which endanger many surface water sources. That is why Chilmark Springwater is not treated with cancer causing chemicals. It doesn’t need to be treated. It is naturally clean and pure, just as it flows from the springs ! We do ozonate our spring water at the time of bottling, to ensure that the water, bottles and caps are sterile. This is for your protection, and to ensure our water’s keeping qualities. Ozone, or O3, is a form of oxygen, which occurs naturally in the atmosphere. It has the unique ability to sterilize without heat or chemicals, causing no taste, and leaving no residue.
