1. Description - Chilmark Springwater is true natural spring water. It comes from glacial sand springs off the North Road, in Chilmark. These springs are surrounded by conservation properties. The spring water is pumped into a stainless tank truck, and driven to our bottling plant at the Martha’s Vineyard Airport Business Park.
2. Operations - Our bottling plant contains commercial bottling equipment, designed and set up for the sanitary bottling of water. Our spring water is filtered, ozonated, and put into new food grade plastic bottles of 20 oz., 2 liter and 1 gallon sizes. We also wash, sanitize and re-fill the standard 3 and 5 gallon water cooler (bubbler) bottles. Additionally, we offer “Private Labeling” on our 20 oz. size bottles.
3. Additional Operations - Besides bottling our water, we also distribute all our products to homes, businesses and stores all over the Island. In some stores, we also “merchandise” our products. This means that we monitor stocking levels, and keep our designated shelf space full at all times. Often, this becomes a full time job. Also, we are now making our own 20 oz. bottles on site. This eliminates the need to drive over 3500 miles a year with a trailer truck, and additionally makes two local jobs. Chilmark Spring Water Co. strives to be “green”.
4. The Process - Bottle pre-forms are placed in a pre-heat oven to heat them. They are then moved to blow molding machines, where they become bottles. The bottles move to an un scrambler, which places them onto the conveyor line. They move to a bottle cleaning machine, and then to the filler, which fills them with our spring water. Then they go to a capping machine, where they are capped. From there they are physically inspected for capping errors and under fills. The bottles are labeled, packed in cardboard boxes, placed on pallets and stacked in our warehouse. They won’t leave the warehouse until after they have been laboratory tested, and found to be bacteria free.
5. Management and Jobs - Chilmark Springwater Co., Inc. is a Massachusetts corporation, owned by two Island families. The Dunkl Family, of Chilmark, ( founders of Chilmark Springwater, and owners of the spring water source ) manage the daily operations of the company. The Dunkls maintain all of the machinery, and do much of the work. The company presently hires help to make bottles, bottle our products, stock store shelves, and maintain inventory levels. Also, we have delivery drivers and sales people who work for us full time, during the season, and part time off-season.
6. Our Specialty - “Private Labeling” - Creating Custom Labeled Spring Water for hotels, businesses, weddings, parties and numerous special events has, in the last three years, developed into the fastest growing sector of our operations. “Private Labeled” bottled Chilmark Springwater has become a very popular item. Because of our trained and experienced “in-house” art staff, we can offer exceptional service, at far below what others charge. The entire operation is done ON - ISLAND. We print our own labels and offer fast service.
